General Information:

The department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) is the first department of its kind in Bangladesh. BUET offers Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. Degree in Computer Science and Engineering. The Education of CSE BUET is world class in both the Curricula and Research activity.

The best students from all over Bangladesh join this prestigious department. The highly competitive environment, world-class facilities and the hard working faculties nourish every student to be a prime of the field. Currently there are about 700 students studying in Undergraduate Program and about 40 students in Graduate Program.

History:

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the first department of its kind, was established in 1982 under the faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. From the very initial days of its establishment, it has been able to attract the very best students of the country. Students securing topmost merit positions in the legendary admission test of BUET opt for studies in this department. At the very beginning, the department offered only M. Sc. Engg. and M Engg. degrees in Computer Science and Engineering. The Undergraduate program started in 1986. At first, 30 students were admitted each year for pursuing the B.Sc. Engineering degree. Starting from the academic session 1994-1995, the number was increased to 45 and from the session 1997-1998 the number was further increased to 60. Considering the growing need of computer science graduates, the department decided to enroll 120 students per session and started to do so from the academic session 2000-2001. So far in 18 batches 1042 students have been awarded B.Sc. Engineering, more than 138 M.Sc Engineering and 2 Ph.D. degree from this department. The department has now active faculty strength of 62 with 15 having Ph.D. Degree in different branches of Computer Science and Engineering. Currently 18 teachers are abroad for higher studies.

Over the years, this ever-flourishing department has been providing the technical foundation, scholarly guidance and leadership skills that have resulted in a number of highly qualified and skilled computer graduates, proving their potentiality home and abroad. With an educated, sincere and enthusiastic faculty, a continuous enrollment of brilliant students and an amicable teacher-student interaction - the department has become a unique one in its field.

Location:

The BUET campus is in the heart of the capital of Dhaka. It has a compact campus with halls of residences within walking distances of the academic buildings. At present the campus occupies 76.85 acres(31.1 hectares) of land. The academic area is defined by Shahid Sharani, Bakshi Bazar Road and Asian Highway.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is located on the West wing of the New Academic Building (West Polashi) of BUET. It is a twelve storied building. The class rooms occupy the first and second floors whereas the labs are located on the ground, fourth and fifth floors. Bangladesh Korea Information Access Center is situated in the ground floor. The departmental office and library are located on the third floor.

Welcome to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. In this department we create future computer engineers and responsible citizens.

This department was the first of its kind to offer computer science/engineering education in Bangladesh. It started in 1984 when only post graduate education was offered. Then in 1986, we started undergraduate education. The first intake was only 30 students. As of this moment, the number is 120.

Our students are the best of the best, and again the best of them are our faculty members. In this department, you will find teachers who are very young, as well teachers who got the opportunity to attain age and maturity. A very friendly and congenial atmosphere exists for fostering a friendly and healthy teacher-student relationship.

Here, a students gets the opportunity to excel in his academic activities. This is one of the very few departments where undergraduate students publish papers in international journals. At the same time, a student wishing to achieve some recognition in extra-curricular or co-curricular activities will also find the atmosphere helpful.
